Business mission to Peru

At the beginning of April, together with other Czech companies from the water sector, we completed a two-week mission to existing and potential partners in Peru.

Although Peru has a huge amount of freshwater, its distribution across the country is uneven, which has far-reaching consequences for its availability to the population and the country’s economy.
Most of the water resources are located in the Amazon, while nearly two-thirds of the population live along the Pacific coast. And it is the coastal areas that have faced drought and water shortages in recent years. Climate change, El Niño, which brings with it changes in rainfall patterns, deforestation and over exploitation of water resources are exacerbating these problems. Drought in turn affects agriculture,
electricity production and access to drinking water for the population.

In 2023, the water sector in Peru is on a positive growth trajectory. This growth, which was 3.7%, was supported by increasing investment in infrastructure and water capacity development. Given the continued trend and the expected growth of 3.3% in 2024, the sector appears to be on a path to stable development. This is particularly important in the context of providing basic needs for a growing population and economic activities that are heavily dependent on water.

As part of a very intensive program, we met with major players in the water industry – private operators, distributors, planners and government institutions responsible for drinking water supply and wastewater treatment.

During the mission, we also visited several wastewater treatment plants together with the companies, including the La Chira WWTP, which treats 30% of the wastewater of Lima and Callao, i.e. for more than 3 million inhabitants.

We obtained important information and made the necessary contacts to be involved in existing and upcoming projects such as La Nueva Atarjea WWTP, Chincha WWTP and Puerto Maldonado WWTP.

We were in the right place at the right time! Peru is planning major investments in new WWTPs and drinking water treatment plants. Several large projects are currently being launched and are in the pipeline. This is because the lack of access to drinking water and sanitation for the population needs to be addressed.
